The How and What

The blog

The Lonely Pirouette (formerly Lonely Girl, Lonely World) blog began as one dance artist’s journey to healing, emotionally and physically, through rediscovering her relationship to dance and her love of travel.

Now combining the two, the blog offers an introspective — sometimes humorous — look at her unique experiences traversing the globe, participating in dance and cultural events, and searching for that elusive and ethereal notion of home.

Lonely Girl in a Lonely World: The Trip That Started It All - Lonely Pirouette
In 2023 I was itching to go somewhere — anywhere — that wasn’t in my own country of residence. I’d been feeling cooped up for many years — owing to a combination of COVID-19 and…

The Meaning of Home: Where is It? - Lonely Pirouette
Is home a physical place? Is it where your friends are, your family? Or can it be something else entirely? Home is within me. Let’s start with my answer right away. When travelling, especially for…

What is dance travel?

Also known as “dance tourism,” dance travel is the dancer’s key to seeing the world while developing their craft.

dance travel — n. a means of travelling the world using dance as a catalyst and/or foremost purpose; activities can include taking workshops, attending festivals, teaching dance, and more.

Passion

Who am I?

The story

My name is Angela. I’m a dance artist, actress, and performance technician. I graduated with a BFA Special Honours in Dance (Choreography/Performance). I’ve also filmed multiple commercials for brand names like Canadian Tire, HelloFresh, Panda Express, Yankee Candle, and the CAA. Behind the scenes, I’m a stage manager, theatre technician, and occasional lighting designer (though I would LOVE to do more!). I am also honoured to have served as a Dance Juror for the Dora Mavor Moore Awards 2022/23 season.

In 2020, I underwent ACL reconstruction surgery for my knee after tearing it fully during a dance audition. It took me two years to recover, and even now my knee is not the same — and never will be.

However, I am a better dancer now than I was before the surgery, and in 2023 I went on my first solo international trip to a dance retreat in Portugal that transformed my life. It was there that I realized I am not done with dance, and dance is not done with me.

In the past few years, I’ve traversed the globe (solo!) to attend dance festivals, workshops, intensives, and retreats — anything to get me moving and seeing the world. I’ve hit highs, and I’ve hit utter lows. Lonely Girl, Lonely World (aka. Lonely Pirouette) was thus borne out of a desire to share my love of dance and travel through a medium I’ve always enjoyed, writing. It’s also a platform for me to address the harsh realities of the dance industry and what it means to be a dancer.

On this blog, you’ll find stories of love and life, trauma, and, of course, dance. We are all ever-evolving beings, and my hope is that these words bring us a little closer to each other… Dance brings us a little closer to each other.

Connection

The Why

Dancers often live in a bubble. Not for lack of networking but lack of information.

The dance world is heavily copyrighted (with some exceptions), and so much information that doesn't have to be gatekept, well, is.

But even more important is the global reduction of funding to the arts from governments and education boards. All around the world, dance, music, drama, and visual arts are being cut from statutory programs (and even electorals).

At the same time, increasing research shows that art is necessary. Dance is necessary. Movement is necessary.

Dance is healing.

When we dance, we connect with our inner joy.

And when we dance unbridled, with passion and ecstasy, we connect with the souls of those around us. Freedom is within us. Connection comes easy.

In a society that feels increasingly lonely, true connection is rare to come by – but it's possible through the joy of movement.

Lonely Pirouette is my answer to the call. I aim to open the doors for dance and travel and de-mystify the questions surrounding dance accessibility.

This journal is my motivation and personal legend. One day I hope to look back and see the pirouettes I've spun.

This beautiful, lonely world is still ripe with possibilities. The chances are there if you take the leap.

Risk and you will receive.
